He hunched over his desk. Yesterday his customer had been transfixed by tales of wide oceans, sea salt crusted on sailors’ lips, and fantastical creatures in ethereal mists. Wide-eyed with wonder, his benefactor had paid the cartographer handsomely to capture it on heavy vellum. His imagination inflamed, he demanded illustrations and geographical accuracies. The artisan worked diligently, inks drawing out colourful details. He studied the maps of others, adding flourishes of his own. His eyes ached with concentration, for it is hard to make maps if you have never left the safety of the harbour in your small port town.
