50-word Flash Fiction
Not for the first time, I have been inspired to write some 50-word flash fiction using prompts offered by Miguel S.
Ocean
Something woke him. Blissful irony. Each day he woke into a dream world. A sleek ocean-going yacht, boundless horizons unfolding. Raucous splintering tipped him from the bunk. A glowing dawn silhouetted the wallowing shipping container, sharp edges dashing dreams. Escaping rubber ducks surrounded the upturned hull, a mockery in yellow.
Sphere
The world’s finest glassblower filled his ledger with commissions for princes and dukes of every kingdom. This sphere was perfect. Nestled in a velvet-lined stand, it cast shimmering kaleidoscopes on the marbled terrace. The craftsman beamed. His Lordship stepped closer. Dazzled, he stumbled, an arm outstretched. One hairline crack. Shattered.
Rain
The downpour was torrential but he was stubborn. The huge nails bit sharply into seasoned wood as the heavy handmade mallet beat them remorselessly. Puddles turned to pools, then lakes. He’s satisfied. It’s built to withstand the Lord’s wrath. She shouted, “The unicorns escaped, Noah”. “Cast off. Unicorns be damned”.
Flower
The staccato drumroll of heavy boots declared the simmering probability of brutal suppression. The line of mirrored visors reflected a resolute gathering of women with no rights who had found the courage to claim some. The girl stepped closer, fearlessly sliding a single-stem peace lily into a cold barrel.

I knew there was a reason I never see unicorns on my hill!
Brilliant Barrie, all.. but Rain especially… and it’s not often I say that!
I love this idea!
