Do you remember the rhyme?
“One for sorrow, two for joy, three for a girl and four for a boy, five for silver, six for gold, seven for a secret never to be told”?
Magpies hold a place in our imagination. Superstitions abound.
Never pass one without saying “Good Morning, Mr Magpie, how are you, and how’s your wife?”.
I wonder, as I pedal, startling the birds from their perches, what the magpies think of us.
Do they sing a short rhyme about humans?
“One for lonely, two’s a pair, three is a family, four travel where …”.
Perhaps not.

I like this Barrie - intelligent creatures Magpies so perhaps they do?
Ah the magpie.
In Australia the mythos around them has made many people fearful and scared of them.
And yet, that came mythos is a sign of affection is it not?
Personally I've never been swooped by one and as I've grown older I've come to appreciate them for the beautiful creatures they are. Love listening to magpies sing. Sounds like summer.
